Biografie

Thelonious Monk war ein Jazzmusiker (Klavier). Thelonious Monk wurde am 10. Oktober 1917 in Rocky Mount geboren und starb am 17. Februar 1982 in Englewood. Stilistisch wird die Musik meist Jazz, Bebop und Hard Bop zugeordnet. Plattenlabels: Blue Note, Columbia Records, Prestige und Riverside-Records. Die Diskografie umfasst hier 77 Alben, von „Genius of Modern Music, Volume 1“ (1951) bis „Bremen 1965“ (2025). Zu den Auszeichnungen zählen Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1992), Grammy Hall of Fame Award (1998) und Pulitzer Prize Special Citations and Awards (2006).

Thelonious Sphere Monk (* 10. Oktober 1917 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina; † 17. Februar 1982 in Weehawken, New Jersey) war ein US-amerikanischer Jazz-Musiker, der als Pianist und Komponist bekannt wurde. Er war neben Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Christian und Kenny Clarke einer der Mitbegründer des Bebops. Mit seinem eigenwilligen Klavierstil und seinen unverwechselbaren Kompositionen gilt Monk als einer der großen Individualisten und bedeutenden Innovatoren des Modern Jazz.
