Il soul è un genere musicale, derivato dal blues, sviluppata dagli anni sessanta, soprattutto da musicisti neri. Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, Wilson Pickett e Stevie Wonder sono alcuni dei nomi maggiormente rappresentativi della musica soul. La “musica dell'anima” nacque dalla fusione delle sonorità del jazz e del gospel con i modi della canzone pop.
